Ever took an “okay” photograph but had no idea on how to enhance it? Don’t worry, a preset will help you. Follow this no-brainer guide to add literally any presets into Adobe Lightroom CC (aka the mobile version) easily.

This article will show you:

  • What exactly are Lightroom CC Presets

  • How to install Lightroom CC Presets
  • How to use Lightroom CC Presets

What are Lightroom CC Presets?

Photo editing is not that difficult, and to be honest, anyone can do it easily even by using iPhone’s default Photos App!

But if you are picky (which is a good thing by the way, good artists are usually picky), then probably the default App could not satisfy you, as you will need more functionalities and flexibilities.

For all of you picky photographers, there are two good news.

  1. Adobe Lightroom CC is free on your mobile phone. Both Android and iOS.
  2. There are Lightroom Presets, and many of them are free as well (including some on this site)!

Lightroom Presets are painless, one-click solution to edit your photos easily. Why is that so? Because the creators of the preset already edited for you! They have created the most optimal adjustments for a specific theme – such as “Sunset”, “Portrait”, or even some more creative filters like “Vintage” feel, etc. All you need to do is to click on the preset – and then voila! Done! Simple as that.

No matter where you download the presets for your Lightroom mobile, they will be in a .dng format, although they are usually zipped for security and space-saving reasons. Wait, isn’t dng a type of photo? Yes, it is indeed a photograph, but with all the settings (yes, everything you need, curves, colours, anything) embedded in it.

Great! So how to add them into the phone?

I am so glad you asked! Read on, follow the steps, and you will have your presets ready in just a few minutes.

Step 0: Download your preset

Of course, you need a preset to start with.

Yet to have any? What about give some of our free ones a try? They are free, but they are absolutely fantastic too!

Step 1: Import the DNG to Your Mobile Phone

There are a few ways to do so. It is easier to do with a computer, but it is still doable without one.

AirDrop (iOS User)

Unzip the preset you have just downloaded so that you can see the .dng files in it.

Then, AirDrop the dng file to your mobile phone.

By default, the Photos App will pop up and open the .dng file. Some dng files may appear blank – but don’t worry, all your preset settings are still there.

Click the “Share” button, and then choose “Lightroom”

Google Drive (Both Android and iOS)

Unzip the preset you have just downloaded so that you can see the .dng files in it.

Then, upload the dng file to your Google Drive.

After that, go to Google Drive on your mobile phone, and open the dng file.

Select “Open In”, then choose “Lightroom”

[If you do not have the Google Drive App on your mobile phone, you can also copy the link, send it to your phone, and then follow the rest. But using Google Drive App is hassle-free, so I strongly recommend to install it.]

The “No Computer” Method

You also have the option to extract the presets from the zip file solely by using your mobile phone. By doing so, you may require a third-party zip extractor.

Here are a few for your consideration.

Android:

RAR: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rarlab.rar

7Zipper: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.joa.zipperplus7

iOS:

iZip : https://apps.apple.com/us/app/izip-zip-unzip-unrar-tool/id413971331

WinZip: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/winzip-1-zip-unzip-tool/id500637987

Step 2: Open the DNG in Lightroom CC

If you follow the steps above, Lightroom should pop up automatically. The dng file should also be visible.

Go to top right corner, and click on the symbol with three dots.

Step 3: Create Preset

Step 4: Name your Preset

Give your Preset a name. Caution! Don’t mess around with those tick boxes at the bottom. The creator of the preset has already handled that for you. Ticking or unticking any of the boxes may change the profile of the preset, and thus you will not get the desired effect.

You can also categorise your presets into different “groups”. By default all your custom presets are in the “User Presets” Preset Group, but feel free to change it to suit your needs.

Step 5: Success!

A pop up message should show up saying “[Name of the Preset] added to [Name of Your Preset Group]”.

How to apply the Presets in Lightroom CC?

So now you have imported the preset. It is time for application.

Trust me, it is super, super easy. Takes you three seconds maybe?

Start your timer now.

Step 1: Go to the bottom, click on the “Presets” button

Step 2: Choose a Preset, then “Tick” at the Bottom Right Corner

Done! How long did it take?

Of course, no preset alone is perfect. You may still need to do some mild adjustments after applying the preset. But a good preset should give you a “feel” that you want, that is usually by changing the tones, the HSL, the RGB curves and other settings.
